Melbourne designers have always been internationally recognised for their innovation and creativity. Brides and grooms can confidently shop right here at home knowing the designs they are choosing are also blitzing the catwalks of other fashion capitals of the world such as Paris, London and New York. Melbourne is one of the most popular wedding locations in Australia due not only to its style and cosmopolitan charm, but also to the variety of services available. From the grandeur of the 19th century architecture prevalent in the inner city to the informality and natural beauty of the parks and gardens, lush countryside and scenic mountains, Melbourne caters for all tastes and styles to ensure your day is exactly the way you want.
If you are after an outdoor wedding and are not lucky enough to have or know someone with a beautiful garden, Melbourne has an outstanding network of parks and gardens. These range from 19th Century spaces, rich with heritage features and grand avenues of trees, to the 188 hectare Royal Park recreated as a representation of an Australian landscape. There is also the stunning Carlton Gardens and the Royal Exhibition Building which have received international acclaim by being inscribed on the World Heritage list in 2004. If you chose a public garden you will need to advise the local council in advance to avoid conflicting venue arrangements. You must also arrange for any permits which may be necessary. Melbourne City Council parks have designated sites which may be booked (for a fee) for weddings. Visit www.melbourne.vic.gov.au for information and to obtain a permit application or contact the Melbourne City Council on (03) 9658 9658. See our outdoor weddings section for more information.
Access
Melbourne Airport operates 24 hours a day. It is Australia’s second busiest airport and services all the major international and domestic airlines. Interstate train and bus services provide excellent access, arriving right into the heart of the CBD. Sometimes, if you have a number of guests travelling to your wedding, you may be able to organise travel discounts through either the service provider or your local travel agent.
Climate
Climate and weather conditions are very important considerations when planning your wedding. Melbourne’s average daily maximum temperature in summer is around 28°C. The warmer months are popular for weddings so remember to book well in advance. Rainfall throughout the year is fairly high with about 140 rainy days per year. Winter temperatures are cool to cold, with the average daily maximum around 10°C. Winter days are short with dusk arriving very quickly and sunset about 5pm, so if you are considering outdoor wedding photographs, it may be a good idea to have an early wedding.
Melbourne is renowned for its changeable weather so if you are to be married outside, ensure an alternative venue and an effective way of contacting guests at short notice has been arranged. Remember, if you have chosen a venue such as the Dandenong Ranges, it will be much cooler than Melbourne itself. It is important you and your guests enjoy the day. Summer months can be very hot so consider the comfort of elderly people and young children when planning your day. You may need to consider air-conditioning or heating for both the ceremony and reception. Finally, remember to consider the expected temperature and location of the wedding and choose appropriate styles and fabrics for the bridal party.
