Your Local Wedding Guide Geelong
Bridal fashion designers in the region are now internationally recognised for their innovation and creativity so brides and grooms can confidently shop right here knowing the designs they are choosing are blitzing the catwalks of Paris, London and New York - traditionally recognised as the fashion capitals of the world. Geelong, Victoria’s largest regional city, is less than an hours drive from Melbourne. Built on the shores of north-facing Corio Bay, it is a picturesque blend of waterfront, parks, gardens and beaches that provide wonderful locations for ceremonies, photographs and receptions whether for a relaxed styled wedding or more formal. The natural beauty of Corio Bay is enhanced by the newly transformed Waterfront Geelong, a destination perfect for outdoor weddings.

If you are planning a garden wedding, you may have your own beautiful garden or know someone who is willing to host your wedding. Otherwise there are a large number of public parks and gardens, many close to the city centre and each with their own special character, to choose from in Geelong. If you have chosen a public garden such as Geelong Botanic Gardens you will need to advise the local council up to three months in advance to avoid conflicting venue arrangements and arrange for any permits which may be necessary. The Council parks have designated sites that may be booked (sometimes for a fee). To marry in any of the parks, you must talk to the Geelong City Council. They can be contacted on (03) 5227 0270. See our outdoors wedding section for more information.

Access
Excellent access to Geelong is provided through the Avalon Airport, just 22 kilometres from Geelong city centre. Melbourne International Airport is just 55 minutes away and bus links to Geelong can easily be arranged. There is also a network of buses to Melbourne and intercity trains connecting Geelong to interstate trains at Spencer Street Station, Melbourne. Alternately, car and passenger ferries connect the Mornington Peninsula to Bellarine Peninsular, which run hourly 7am to 6pm daily. This is a great way to cross Port Phillip Bay in luxury. Sometimes, if you have a number of guests travelling to your wedding, you may be able to organise travel discounts through either the service provider or your local travel agent.

Climate
Climate and weather conditions are very important considerations when planning your wedding. Geelong’s average daily maximum temperature in summer is around 24°C, the minimum around 13°C. Winter is the wetter time of the year with temperatures that are cool and crisp. The average daily maximum is around 14°C and the minimum around 5°C. Spring and autumn are usually warmer and dryer and consequently the most popular times for weddings. You need to book at least 12 to 18 months ahead if you are considering marrying during these times.

During winter, dusk can arrive very quickly and so an early wedding is a very good idea. Summer months can be hot and humid so summer brides should consider this when planning for the ceremony and reception. Perhaps bottled water would be a good idea and a nice shady spot for outdoor weddings. If you are to be married outside, ensure an alternative venue and an effective way of contacting guests at short notice has been arranged, particularly during the wetter months. It is important you and your guests enjoy the day so remember to consider the comfort of elderly people and young children when planning your day. Finally, remember to consider the expected temperature and location of the wedding and choose appropriate styles and fabrics for the bridal party.
