Knowing what will work, and what would look better on someone with another body or another life, is the key to fashion success. What makes a boring basic for one woman can look like the height of cool on another; it can turn that charity shop bargain into a stunning and unique outfit for the woman who is clever enough to know it has her name on it. It really is about knowing what to choose from the latest season and leaving the rest well alone. Here are a few tips to make difficult trends work for you – without making you look like a desperate fashion victim.

Bright Colours It can be like coming back into the sunshine after years of wearing black, but it can also make you look like a clown. Absorb the colour gradually, start with a scarf or some simple knitwear, then gradually as you become confident and know what colours work best for you, make bolder statements. |

Stacked Heels Good shoes are essential. They hold the power to make or break an outfit. I have literally shopped all day for one pair of shoes… It is worth noting that not every shape will be flattering on you. Chunky heels come in and out of fashion and are easier to balance on than a stiletto, but they can make thick legs look even wider. Beware of ankle straps – they shorten and thicken all but the thinnest leg. The most universally flattering shoe style is a pair of sexy high heels. They make your legs look longer and slimmer and can give you a confidence boost. Try and stick to no higher than 3 cm to make sure you don’t totter. |

Prints An all-over print is actually a good way to disguise figure faults as it keeps the eye moving across the body, but choose smaller prints if you are trying to look slimmer or are short in stature. Large prints really only work on tall, model-like figures. |

Frills and ruffles Excessive frills can have a negative effect looking too girly or fussy on grown-up women. They should be avoided by anyone on the stocky side. However a pretty blouse with a hint of frill can make any outfit glamourous. They also work great if you have a boyish figure and want to create curves. |

Miniskirts The sad truth is, even if you have the hottest legs in the world, you will be hard pressed to carry off very short skirts once you pass the age of 30. Try and be honest with yourself here and do not overdo the hemline. |
