His duties start at the beginning of the reception by announcing the arrival of the bride and groom. Later he/she will introduce other speakers and those who are making the toasts. When selecting your MC, consider someone who is articulate and comfortable speaking to large crowds. It can be best to find someone with a good sense of humour, who can help keep things on a light and interesting level. If you don’t know anyone, you can hire a professional MC who will ensure your guests are kept smiling, and your reception kept running on time. Ensure you give the MC, and all speechmakers, at least one month to prepare.
The reception usually runs in this order:
- guests arrive at reception and are served light refreshments
- bridal party arrives slightly later (usually because they have been having photographs taken at another location)
- MC/entertainer announces the bride and groom’s entrance
- bridal party enters and is seated
- MC asks all guests to be seated
- usually grace is offered before the meal is served
- MC welcomes the guests and toasts the bride and groom
- groom responds and toasts the bridesmaids
- best man responds, thanking the couple on behalf of the groomsmen and bridesmaids
- a toast is then delivered to the bride’s parents - this is usually given by one of their close friends or relations
- bride’s father responds
- a toast is then delivered to the groom’s parents - this is also usually given by one of their close friends or relations
- groom’s father responds
- a toast to the grandparents (optional)
- finally, the MC asks if anyone else would like to speak
- telegrams and messages are read by the best man
- the cake is cut after dessert
- traditionally the bridal waltz is the first dance of the evening led by the bride and groom as they have their first dance as a married couple. The bridal party and the parents of the bride and groom then follow them with other guests finally joining in. (insert link to dance)
These suggested speeches and toasts are a guide only and should be adapted to individual circumstances and taste. Many couples arrange the evening’s proceedings in a manner that is reflective of their own character, relationship and cultural background. |
