theming + decorating

A themed wedding is a fun and creative way of personalising your wedding. Choose a theme that best defines your tastes, characters and relationships. You could theme your wedding with, for example, a Scottish or Indian influence to reflect your cultural background.

Alternatively, maybe you met while holidaying in Thailand so why not consider a Thai theme or were proposed to in Paris and decided on a French theme. There is no end to the possibilities and they can be as simple or as complex as you wish. Romantic, candlelit, butterflies, floral or Celtic themes are also popular choices. Simple colour themes look stunning and often reflect the wedding party colours. Currently pastel themes teamed with the old world charm of lace and feathers are increasing in their popularity.

Couples are turning towards very feminine, soft and elegant styles, including the 1920’s themes. Colours such as soft pink are emerging more frequently however there still remains a strong presence of chocolate, ivory and gold. These themes can also be reflected in the invitations, cake, flowers or jewellery and flow through to the ceremony and reception. There are so many ways to make your wedding individually yours. While weddings are traditionally on a Saturday afternoon, there are lots of other options you may like to consider:

  • a river wedding that provides constantly changing scenery and atmosphere for your guests as they cruise up the river on a boat hired for the day;
  • have a simple garden ceremony at dawn followed by a champagne breakfast;
  • hold the champagne breakfast first, then the ceremony and then jump into a hot air balloon with your spouse and float away for a carefree day;
  • stage a fancy dress party and surprise guests as a bride and groom who get married!;
  • in some cultures, the wedding celebrations go on for days with a pre-wedding feast, wedding day celebrations and post-wedding breakfast - you too could have an extended wedding that goes on for days;
  • hold an intimate wedding ceremony on the beach at sunset; or
  • choose a Sunday and have a long lazy lunch. Also remember that many wedding professionals and suppliers offer discounted rates for Sundays (or any other day to Saturday)

  Once you know what type of ceremony and reception you would like and have booked your date and time, you will find it easier to effectively plan the rest of the day. When you have selected your wedding and reception venues you will need to consider the decorating. The first decision is to decide whether you want to organise all the decorating details yourself, or whether you can afford to leave it to a professional to handle. A professional decorator can work magic - not only do they have the necessary items to make your reception venue look fantastic, but also the creative ability. Before hiring a decorator, ask to see photographs of recent weddings they have handled. Most decorators are true artists whose skill at creating a dream scene is often truly wonderful to behold. Hiring a professional will mean you can decide on what your ceremony and reception venues should look like, and then leave the hard work of completing the picture to your decorator. A professional will ensure everything turns up on time, nothing is forgotten, and everything looks perfect.

If hiring a professional is beyond your budget, search for ideas from magazines, photographs and by visiting our bridal expos. Your florist and reception centre will be able to help but you may also need items such as wedding arches, chair covers, drape material, special signs, columns, candelabras, topiary trees, silk flowers, fairy lights, ribbon, balloons, bomboniere and the like. Ribbon on pew ends at the church, table flowers and, or balloons, special candles and photograph displays are all great ideas that will make your day special.

You will be able to hire most of these items from a decorating specialist. These professionals will also be able to give you ideas, and show you how to put them together. Spend some time considering your options as decorations certainly make venues appear both magnificent and unique.
