When choosing your wedding cake, there are a few things you should take into consideration:
- Size and Shape – the size of your wedding cake will depend on how many guests you have invited. The shape of your cake can be anything you dream of. However, traditionally the cake has been square or round, because it is easier to cut, and is more likely to serve more guests.
- Design - the design of your cake should be a reflection of who you are as a couple. Whether you have a theme for your wedding, or would like the cake to stand out from the rest, a skilled baker should be able to fulfil your request to your satisfaction.
- Flavour – As much as your cake should be visually delicious, there is no point having a cake noone will want to eat. There are many flavours available for wedding cakes including carrot, chocolate, rum, white and lemon. Bakers have come along way from the traditional fruit cake.
What to ask the baker:
- Do you have a portfolio? Ask the baker to show you pictures of wedding cakes they have done previously. This will help you decide if you like the creativity and skills of the baker.
- Do you make custom designs? Find out if the baker welcomes custom designed wedding cakes, and ask if there is an extra charge for this service.
- Can we have a taste test? Ask the baker for a taste test before you order your cake. Many good bakers will let you taste the various cakes, frostings and fillings used on their cakes.
- Is there any other fees? Establish with your baker if there are any costs for delivery or setup. There may be additional charges for items such as pillars, columns, or plates. Find out any costs that you may incur and get it all in writing for your protection.
Wedding cake etiquette:
- The wedding cake should be displayed on a beautifully decorated table, which goes in front of the bridal table, without blocking guests view of the bride and groom.
- The cake is cut after the reception lunch or dinner has been served.
- The cutting of the cake is announced by the MC before it is cut.
- The right hand of the groom goes over the right hand of the bride, while they cut the wedding cake together. The first slice is fed by the groom to his bride, after which the bride serves her new husband.
