honeymoons

A honeymoon is traditionally the time when newly married couples relax and recuperate after the wedding. The idea is to enjoy themselves in a holiday environment before returning to the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Before you embark on your honeymoon, you may want to choose somewhere special to stay on your wedding night, preferably close to your reception, as you may not feel like travelling too far. Favourite overseas honeymoon destinations include Fiji, Noumea, Italy, New Zealand, Vanuatu, Singapore, Bali and Hong Kong. Closer to home, Queensland is very popular with honeymooners. Cairns offers tropical bliss (but only during cooler months) while the Whitsunday Islands offer some of the best beaches in the world. Other ideal honeymoon locations can be found all along the Queensland coast. Good packages are available for a range of Queensland honeymoon holidays which include your flights, accommodation, transfers, breakfasts and in some cases, car hire.

Tasmania is a lush green haven that many couples choose as their honeymoon destination. Tasmania is rich in well-preserved history and features some wonderful attractions. If you are to wed in winter, you could find yourself in a very cosy honeymoon at one of Australia’s ski resorts. Perisher Valley and the Thredbo region in New South Wales are popular skiing destinations, while Falls Creek is just one of the snowy white wonders to behold in Victoria. For those who would rather slip into their best evening attire than ski gear, Australia’s capital cities can be wonderful honeymoon destinations. Sightseeing by day and wining and dining before going to the theatre at night is a wonderful way to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Many capital cities are a good base for those who want to visit attractions in nearby regional areas too. A handy drive from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth find some of the finest wine growing regions in the world. A delight for wine buffs, most wineries provide delicious cuisine to accompany their superb Australian vintages. Many wineries provide accommodation and some farm houses and cabins are designed for couples wanting to get away from it all.

According to tradition, the groom pays for the honeymoon, but today, if the bride and groom are both employed, costs are often shared. Reservations should be made as soon as you start planning you wedding - particularly if the destination will be experiencing its peak season during the honeymoon period. Making arrangements too late can result in disappointment and may mean a total change of holiday plans.

Travel agencies can take a lot of the hassle out of planning a honeymoon, enabling couples to be well organised with nothing important overlooked. Those planning an overseas honeymoon should apply for passports and, if required, visas early. Passports usually only take ten days to organise but visas often take much longer. Depending on where you are travelling, some countries require passports to be valid for six months prior to departure while others require six months validity remaining on your passport from when you are due home. Your travel agent should also advise you if inoculations are required or advisable before entering a foreign country.

Remember to inquire about travel insurance, just in case plans change at the last minute or something happens overseas. Also remember it is a good idea to check whether you and your partner need certain vaccines for your holiday destination. Ask your travel agent for details when booking trip. Alternatively, visit a specialist travel doctor to check the latest requirements for specific countries.

With good planning and some advice from a professional travel agent, your honeymoon should be one of the happiest times of your life, a holiday to remember for all time.
